In celebration of World Health Day, English River Secondary School hosted a vibrant series of events under the banner of World Health Week, promoting wellness, awareness, and a commitment to healthy living. This year’s activities brought together students, educators, healthcare professionals, and community partners in a collaborative effort to encourage positive lifestyle choices.

According to Mr. Deepak Radhakrishnan, Head of the Science Department, the annual event is an important part of the school’s health education calendar. “Each year, the Science Department highlights the importance of a healthy lifestyle across all levels of the school. This time, we organized a poster competition for S1 and S2 students, and an Interhouse Quiz Competition for students from S3 to S5,” he shared.

Student Engagement and Healthy Competition

The week featured a poster design contest focused on this year’s theme: “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Future.” Students creatively expressed messages promoting exercise, good nutrition, mental health, and disease prevention. Meanwhile, the Interhouse Quiz Challenge tested senior students’ knowledge on various health-related topics, encouraging teamwork and academic enthusiasm.

Both competitions were supported by the Indian High Commission, which also provided prizes for the winners. Staff members from the High Commission were present at the prize-giving ceremony and commended the school for its proactive approach to health education.

Free Health Screenings for Staff

In partnership with Dr. Murthy’s Clinic, school staff received free health screenings on Friday, April 11th. Beginning at 8:30 AM, nearly 75 staff members underwent tests for diabetes, hypertension, BMI, as well as eye and oral health assessments.

Dr. Keerthna from Dr. Murthy’s Clinic, who conducted the dental check-ups, remarked, “This gave me a valuable opportunity to interact with the staff and better understand the dental health needs within the local school community.”

A Collaborative Effort for a Healthier Future

The school management expressed heartfelt thanks to the Indian High Commission and Dr. Murthy’s Clinic for their generous support and continued involvement in student and staff well-being. Special appreciation was also extended to the Science Department for planning and executing a successful and meaningful health week.

By combining education with practical health services, World Health Week at English River Secondary School proved once again that health awareness starts with knowledge—and thrives with community.
