March 23rd, known as World Meteorological Day, is more than just a day in the calendar. It’s an opportunity for educational institutions around the world to shine a light on the crucial field of meteorology, particularly as it relates to pressing issues like climate change and water conservation.

A Deep Dive into Meteorology

At our school, we took this opportunity to not just acknowledge but truly delve into the subject. In accordance with the theme to accentuate the significance of meteorology, both locally in Seychelles and globally, our S5 geography students were given a unique chance. They attended a talk by a dedicated staff member from the Meteorological Department. Held in the serenity of the School Library, this session aimed to sensitize our young minds to the reality of climate change and the vital role water plays in our ecosystem.

A Battle of Wits: The Meteorological Quiz

Knowledge, once gained, is truly retained when it is tested. To further the spirit of learning, our Geography and History teachers organized a captivating quiz for our S2 students. Representing their respective houses with zeal, the students eagerly showcased their understanding. The fierce but friendly competition ended with the following rankings:

  • 🥇 Whale clinching the 1st position,
  • 🥈 followed closely by Dolphin in 2nd place,
  • 🥉 with Marlin securing the 3rd spot,
  • and Shark valiantly wrapped up in the 4th position.

Term 1, 2023: More than Just Classes

While World Meteorological Day was certainly a highlight, our term was dotted with various engaging activities:

  • Our S34 Geography students, under the guidance of Ms Wendy, ventured out to the local market. This field trip was designed to enrich their understanding of trade dynamics at a grassroots level, aligning with their topic “Introduction to Trade.”
  • Transport and traffic patterns are essential components of urban studies. Recognizing this, our S4 students, accompanied by Ms Wendy, Ms Emily, and Ms Stella, headed out into town for a meticulous traffic count.
  • The natural world around us offers endless learning opportunities. Tapping into this, our S22 Geography students were escorted by Ms Wendy for an enlightening field study on the various uses of rocks.

Wrapping Up

Education is not limited to the confines of a classroom. It’s about interactive experiences, exploring the world around us, and understanding the intricate balance of nature. Our celebration of World Meteorological Day and the subsequent activities of Term 1 is a testament to this holistic approach to learning.
